How to Choose the Ideal Music Source for Your Project

First define the project’s objective

Before looking for a specific song or musical piece, it is important to know what you want to achieve.

Choosing music for a corporate video is not the same as choosing it for a party, for a business presentation or for a video intended for social media.

For example, energetic music is ideal for a sporting event, while a softer melody is better suited to a professional presentation.

Ask yourself what kind of feeling you want to generate in the viewers: energy, emotion, confidence, joy or calm.

Take your audience into account

Music must also be suited to the people the project is aimed at.

People’s musical tastes vary greatly depending on their age, culture and type of audience. A song that works for a younger audience may not be appropriate for an older one.

Context is also something that needs to be taken into account. The music for a corporate event must match the seriousness of the occasion.

If you know your audience, you will be able to choose a musical style they can identify with.

Choose a coherent musical style

Music can be divided into many genres and styles, such as pop, rock, electronic, jazz, classical, among many others.

It is not necessary to choose a single genre, but it is important that the choice makes sense for the project.

A classical piece can convey elegance and sophistication, while an electronic beat can provide energy and dynamism.

What matters is that the music accompanies the project and does not work against it.

Consider the tempo and energy

Another of the basic elements is tempo.

Fast music can make you feel more energised and dynamic, while a slow melody is better suited to reflective or emotional content.

For example, for a promotional video with many different images, it may be a good idea to use music with a dynamic tempo that matches the pace of the images.

The music must suit the project and adapt to its different phases.

Music with lyrics or instrumental?

This is one of the most important decisions.

Songs with lyrics are a good option when the content reinforces the message you want to communicate, but they can be distracting if the audience has to read subtitles or listen to a narration.

In general, instrumental music works very well as a background for videos, presentations, podcasts or events where there is a lot of text or voiceover.

If the audience has to concentrate on a spoken message, a simple instrumental melody can help maintain attention without causing distraction.

Check the usage rights

An important point we cannot overlook is the issue of copyright.

Not all the music we find on the internet is free to use in a project. A commercial song may be protected by copyright and require specific licences.

Before using a musical work, it is important to review the conditions of use and obtain the appropriate licence.

A piece may have different licences and different rules for streaming it, using it in a video or performing it live.

That is why it is not just a matter of finding a good song that fits well, but also of making sure it can be used legally.

Look for a reliable music source

In addition to the usual music platforms, there are specific music banks and libraries for professional use.

These sources can be very helpful in the search, as they allow songs to be filtered by different criteria such as genre, tempo or mood.

They can also provide information on available licences, which is very important if the music is to be used in a commercial project.

A reliable music source saves time and avoids the use of content without the appropriate permissions.

Adapt the music to the length of the project

The duration must also be taken into account.

A long song is not the best option for a thirty-second video. In the same way, a long text or presentation may require several musical pieces.

Sometimes it is necessary to edit the music in some way, using different parts of the same piece, or linking several pieces together.

The music must be part of the project from the start and not appear to have been added as an afterthought.

Do not forget audio quality

The final result is also affected by the quality of the recording.

A poor-quality file can affect the audience’s experience, especially when the project is played in a large space or with a powerful sound system.

Whenever possible, it is better to use good-quality files and check how the music sounds on different devices.

This is very important for events, professional videos, advertising and other projects where sound is a key element.

Run several tests before deciding

Sometimes you cannot tell whether a song is right just by listening to it on its own.

It is good practice to test several options directly in the project. That way, you can check how the music sounds with the images, text or content of the project.

You can create several options and compare them before making your decision.

Sometimes the song you liked first does not fit well with the rest. On the contrary, one that you were not so sure about can turn out to be perfect in the context of the project.

Music must reinforce the message

In conclusion, choosing the perfect music source is not just about finding a song that sounds good.

The music must be aligned with the objective, the audience, the style and the message of the project. It must complement the content and not compete with it.

To decide, it is helpful to look at the type of project, define the emotion you want to communicate, choose a coherent style, verify usage rights and run tests before making the final decision.

The result is that, when all these elements come together, music stops being just one more component and becomes an essential part of the project.
