  • 2025

As part of Fuorisalone 2025, one of the most significant international design events held in Milan, a unique installation was presented, developed by OTB in collaboration with Roca and BIG Architecture: an efficient and interactive water curtain, conceived as part of Roca's exhibition experience. The installation was located in one of the most emblematic areas of the event, serving as a symbolic threshold between the urban environment and the interior exhibition space, capturing visitors' attention with its technical innovation and aesthetic sensitivity.

Design and execution of a water curtain fountain in Milan

Design

The curtain is designed to integrate seamlessly into its environment, respecting the existing vegetation in that corner of the palace courtyard. It consists of 100 slender vertical water threads arranged along a tubular structure measuring 14 meters in length and 4 meters in height. In certain sections, the curtain can be activated or deactivated through a control system responsive to buttons located on an explanatory panel accessible to the public. This interaction allows visitors to pass through the curtain at precise moments, accessing the interior space without getting wet. Additionally, this interactive design enables users to conceptualize the water consumption associated with various daily activities.

The structure, made of high-strength stainless steel, delineates a contemplative space where water and light create a dynamic sensory interplay, reinforcing Roca’s message of sustainability and technological innovation.

Execution

The project was developed in several phases coordinated among design, engineering, and installation teams:

Phase 1 – Engineering and Manufacturing: A high-precision hydraulic system was designed to allow the water threads to fall uniformly without dispersion and with immediate response times upon button activation. A modular steel structure was constructed, designed for easy transport, assembly, and disassembly at international fairs.

Phase 2 – On-site Installation and Adjustment: In Milan, the complete assembly was executed, including the pumping and recirculation system, programming of the operational logic by sections, and testing of all interactive elements. A water treatment and filtration system was also integrated to ensure safe use throughout the event.

Phase 3 – Exhibition Integration and Commissioning: Indirect lighting systems and explanatory signage were installed, with special attention to user interface and overall aesthetics. The installation was delivered on time for activation during the opening of Fuorisalone.

Sustainability

This project was conceived from the outset with sustainability, energy efficiency, and minimal environmental impact in mind:

  • The water recirculation system minimizes consumption, limiting refills solely to compensate for evaporation.
  • High-efficiency pumps and sensors that automatically regulate pressure and flow were employed.
  • All materials used—such as stainless steel and hydraulic components—were selected for their durability, low maintenance, and recyclability.
  • The installation is designed for reuse in other events, promoting a circular economy within ephemeral design.

This project reaffirms OTB’s commitment to technical innovation, conscious design, and the development of sustainable solutions for exhibition and urban spaces.
